If you are starting out in comedy there are a number of ‘open mic’ rooms for you to approach in Perth. Although other rooms do have the occasional ‘open mic’ spot these are usually reserved for comedians who have already done a number of gigs and are building to paid or longer spots. To move up from ‘open mic’ to paid spots it’s best to talk to comedians and room managers when you start gigging – ask for honest advice on your set and your progress and how you can build to longer sets.
The best places to start gigging with ‘open mic’ spots are:
Chuckles is a ‘gong’ style format show where comedians compete for audience attention to stay on stage for 5 minutes. 3 audience judges will hold up elephants if they think the comedian should be gonged off stage. A good challenge for comedians starting out or testing new material.
This is a mainly open mic night featuring a professional MC and Headline act.
This is an experimental and new comedy night in Perth. It’s seen as one of the friendliest crowds in Perth so spots fill up 4 – 6 weeks in advance for new comedians. Spots are limited to 5 minutes in length.
This is a professional stand-up night that hosts an ‘open mic’ set at the end of each night. It’s worth arriving at the beginning of the show to watch established comedians working the room before doing your own 5 minutes at the end.
This is an open mic room usually featuring a professional MC and a feature spot by an upcoming comedian. There are some sound issues in this venue (as there are no walls between the main bar and the comedy room) which can make it hard to perform.
There is an unlimited wealth of advice on stand-up that can be gained from fellow comedians, DVDs, books and of course the internet. Below are some basics to get you started.
The best way to learn is to gig, but we are often asked about courses available. Bootleg does not run any regular courses at this stage. We will list upcoming courses in Perth below, but please note listing does not mean we endorse the courses. This is purely an information listing – please review the background and qualifications of any facilitators to ensure it’s the best course for you.
If you are interested in tutoring we can recommend established comedians depending on your requirements. Please contact us for more information.
