Every year hundreds and hundreds of hopefuls enter the RAW Comedy competition – one of the world’s biggest – and certainly Australia’s largest and most prestigious open mic comedy competition run by Melbourne International Comedy Festival and supported by Triple J.

WA is home to the largest state final – this year held in His Majesty’s Theatre by Comedy Lounge and it saw not one, but two (!!) locals flown over to Melbourne to participate in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

WA Winner Sean Conway spoke about the experience,

“It was great to perform alongside the best upcoming comics from around the country to 2000 people and being able to do it along side another Perth Comic was awesome.”

Colin Ebsworth (runner up) was also flown over for the final and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,
“I found it the most fun I’ve ever had on stage. It was crazy seeing 2000 people in an audience and I thought there was a great amount of talent on display.”

Congratulations go to the winner (no, we won’t ruin the surprise for you) who will be flying to compete in the infamous ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ competition at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August.

Tune into ABC to see the RAW Comedy National Final featuring Chris Menezies (TAS) Demi Lardner (SA) Justin Crooks (NT) Sean Conway (WA) Colin Ebsworth (WA) Jay Morrissey (VIC) Andy Mathews (VIC) Megan McKay (VIC) Aaron Chen (NSW) Cameron Duggan (QLD) Becky Lucas (QLD) Tim Noon (ACT)

Perth International Comedy Festival 2013: Overview

After a stellar inaugural festival in 2012, the Perth International Comedy Festival is hurtling back. Upping the ante, the festival boasts over 50 events and 150 performances over 19 days.
The whole shebang kicks off with the OPENING NIGHT GALA at the Astor Theatre on May 1st and draws to a close with the always-entertaining FESTIVAL FINALE on May 19th. To celebrate the hard-copy program hitting the streets on March 22nd, the festival also be held a GALA LAUNCH PARTY; a special one-off gala at the Astor Theatre that gave everyone their comedy fix a little earlier than usual.

Festival Director Jo Marsh says, “The PICF team and I once again look forward to presenting a diverse program of professional comedic talent for Perth to enjoy.”

With all venues once again being less than a five-minute walk from each other, the Perth International Comedy Festival is keeping it all close enough for you to hop, skip and jump to more than one show in an evening. The iconic Astor Theatre is once again welcoming the festival back with open arms, the Jack High Comedy Club (at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club) will be brought back to life for another spin, and the Velvet Lounge will open its doors to the comedy-faithful once more.

The Perth International Comedy Festival runs from May 1st-19th, 2013.
A ‘Christmas’ cracker of an event for young professionals

Red Shoe Society, Perth’s newest, most vibrant membership for young WA professionals will deck the halls of the Charles Hotel as it kicks off the Christmas party season with a Red Shoe Ho Ho Ho! – a hilarious Christmas crack-up starring nationally acclaimed comedians, Dave Callan, Joel Creasey, Mike Goldstein and Emma Zammit with special guest, Lisa Fernandez from the 92.9 breakfast radio show.

Red Shoe Society members and non-members are invited to attend a Red Shoe Ho Ho Ho! Tickets are $45.00 and available now via Moshtix (www.moshtix.com.au).

Having launched with a bang at Print Hall in September this year, membership to Red Shoe Society is now open to young Western Australian professionals aged 18 – 40 years.

The Society’s collective goal is to raise awareness of Ronald McDonald House Perth as a home-away-from- home for regional WA families of seriously ill children.

“We understand that young professionals have a desire to contribute and get involved in the community, but often find it difficult to give up their time or find it financially challenging to participate in hefty fundraising activities,” Red Shoe Society Chairperson, Holly Creasey said.

“Red Shoe Society aims to create events which are easily accessible, fun and engaging – all while increasing awareness of the Charity among young professionals.”

To learn more about Ronald McDonald House or to become a Red Shoe Society member, contact Courtney Kennedy at Ronald McDonald House on 08 9346 9000, email redshoesociety@hotmail.com or find Red Shoe Society WA on Facebook.

After a sell-out Melbourne International Comedy Festival run Mick Molloy, Glenn Robbins and Jeff Stilson are taking their hilarious show on the road! After years of TV, film and radio appearances, the three comedians have gone back to their roots – standing behind a microphone in front of a roomful of punters. Three men, a microphone and 90 minutes of some of Australia’s best comedy.

Logie nominated Glenn Robbins has been acting and writing in comedy for well over 20 years. When he takes the stage you’ll see a new side of the man best known for his time on The Comedy Company, Fast Forward, The Pane &, Kath and Kim. Hosting the evening, Robbins will introduce two very different stand-up acts.

The enigmatic Mick Molloy is one of Australia’s most successful and well-known comedians, often wearing the writer, actor and producer hat as well. Having been part of Martin/Molloy, The Late Show, Crackerjack and most recently Channel 10’s Before the Game Mick will engage the audience with his witty banter and topical dissection of news.

Joining the familiar Robbins and Molloy on stage is international sensation Jeff Stilson. Familiar to local audiences through his many appearances on The Panel, Stilson has been nominated for 14 Emmy Awards (winning two) for comedy writing and producing and his twenty year stand up career has included regular appearances on Letterman, Conan and Jay Leno. Stilson brings a dry US wit to the stage with his stories of family, life and living in Australia.
